Celebrating Chinese New Year 2018 In London Chinatown

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2018 In London Chinatown

The year of the Earth Dog is well underway. Although Chinese New Celebrations in the Far East are absolutely one of the seven wonders of Chinese culture, the Chinese and greater Asian community and their friends come out in force every year in London. The London Chinatown Chinese Association with the support of The Mayor of London put on an incredible show every year that’s so popular, the streets are literally shoulder to shoulder with people coming to watch. So what goes on?

For London’s Chinese New Year celebrations, the basic format is similar each year. There is a parade and Trafalgar Square becomes the main celebration zone with a stage and big screen. Leicester Square houses the Family and Children Zone, Chinatown’s Gerrard Street has the all-important Food and Cuisine Zone and Shaftesbury Avenue has the Martial Arts and Cultural Zone. Both Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Way roads become closed for the event due to the sheer number of pedestrians and there’s also the Talent and Community Zone outside The National Portrait Gallery.

In the Far East, Chinese New Year is a public holiday with many people on vacation for two weeks or more, like the way Christmas used to be celebrated in the UK. For me, it was a wonderful chance to put down my Feng Shui loupan and close my Tong Shu calendar because for the moment, it was the only auspicious date that mattered!

Here are a few of the pictures I posted onto my Instagram about The Year of The Earth Dog festivities:

Auspicious red lanterns framed Trafalgar Square's main stage out front of the Canadian Embassy. The smell of Chinese barbequed snacks wafted through the air. I knew this was going to be an amazing start to Chinese New Year!

The National Portrait Gallery was quite a picture over the massed crowds, through the lucky red lanterns and amidst the mouthwatering smoke of freshly cooked noodles flying out the wok!

So fluffy! I think these Lion Dancers were from Sifu Lee's Pak Mei Kung Fu troupe. They made a hugely popular dance for several London Chinatown restaurants - this was outside Shuang Shuang on Shaftesbury Avenue. Happy Chinese New Year!

By night, the lights made the lucky new year red lanterns seem all the more auspicious! Happy Chinese New Year to you and everyone! Gong xi fa cai!

Wherever and however you celebrated, I and the team at Rising Dragon Feng Shui wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous Chinese New Year!

Please remember that Feng Shui is not a static concept; many of qi flows we look at when calculating are dynamic and changing with the seasons. The new locations and directions for where is safe to sleep or work have changed and it’s important to know if a negative qi has come to an entrance or other place of frequent movement.

As it’s now the new year, some of the Chinese astrology zodiac signs are due better luck whilst others have the support they’ve enjoyed subside. A look at your Ba Zi will tell if you’re going to explode into being Miss Popular over the coming year or if you’ll develop superpowers as well as a great many more things that concern us all like which areas of our health are worth proactively targeting, how will our work and money prospects fare and what can be said for our love life? Again, the past does not equal the future and how things have been through the 2017 Year of the Fire Rooster may not be the way things will be in the 2018 Year of the Earth Dog.

If you’ve had a Feng Shui consultation in the past, now is a great time to book for a New Year follow up session to refresh your advice so that it serves you correctly after all the adjustments are made. In most cases we can do this by telephone and/or webcam using your existing floorplans and charts. We look forward to updating you on everything you need to know to make 2018 a success soon.
