Lion and Dragon Dancing

What is the purpose of Lion & Dragon Dancing?

Traditionally the Chinese use Lion and Dragon dancers as a symbol of auspiciousness to mark key dates such as Chinese New Year or the opening of a new business premises. While in the West there has been much talk in recent years of 'space clearing', the Chinese seldom use such practices unless performed by a Buddhist or Taoist monk to deal with a spiritual problem. The traditional method of clearing an area is through Auspicious Dancing. There are a number of meanings in this that tie into good Feng Shui:

  1. Chasing away negative energies - the sounding of the drums and cymbals will purify an area of negative and stale chi, allowing a fresh start to be made

  2. Scaring away evil spirits - the powerful dance and presence of a Lion or Dragon will be sufficient to scare away evil spirits from a premises, ensuring that business is unimpeded and that your efforts are met with success

  3. Bringing in auspiciousness - as symbols of strength and good luck, the presence of a Lion or Dragon on an auspicious occasion will bring good luck

It is exactly because of these refreshing, rejuvenating and rewarding qualities that have made the Dragon and Lion Dance such an integral part of Chinese Culture for thousands of years.

What Happens in a Lion Dance?

During a typical Lion Dance there will be at least four practitioners present. Two will form the head and body of the Lion. The additional practitioners will provide music. It's common for there to be several musicians including a drummer, cymbals and gongs. If the Lion Dancers are from a reputable source, they will be able to use a range of musical accompaniments, with varying beats, rhythms and tempos and will also be able to perform acrobatic feats such as jumping on and across pillars. The less skilled will know just the standard beat.

Nam Yang's Lion Dancers and are ranked fourth in the world at Lion Dancing. They are able to demonstrate amazing feats of agility, co-ordination, musical flair and authentic knowledge to customers around the UK. The advantage of using a Lion Dance compared to a Dragon is that the smaller animal will be able to fit into many premises and residences.

Why Use Dragon Dancers rather than Lion Dancers?

The most obvious difference between a Lion and a Dragon is the size, power and presence of the animal. While a Lion requires only two people to bring it to life, a Dragon typically requires a team of fifteen! In fact Dragons requiring over 100 people have been made! Use a Dragon when space permits for maximum auspiciousness.

While the Western concept of a Dragon is of a fire breathing, man eating, evil lizard that steals princesses and hoards money to itself, the Chinese Dragon is quite the reverse. Revered as a sign of auspiciousness, the Dragon bestows good fortune on those it favours. As a sign of how highly the Chinese elevate the Dragon, only their Emperors were allowed to wear the shape of a Dragon on their clothing. Anyone else doing so could meet with capital punishment.

Dragons have mystical powers such as the ability to fly, to grow or shrink in size and to bestow good fortune. The presence of a Dragon Dance frightens away negative spirits that might otherwise cause mischief or calamity and the percussion team will cleanse away negative energy. The whole proceeding brings in much vibrant Yang energy. Dragons are particularly suitable for large organisations and buildings where it will have room to manoeuvre to their full effect.
