The Feng Shui View Of The Solar Eclipse

Solar eclipse

Many of you may be aware that on the 20th of March 2015, the UK and several other Northern hemisphere countries will witness a solar eclipse. This means that the New Moon will move exactly in between the Earth and the Sun, causing darkness to fall across the land.

This is a rare event. It’s not till 2026 that another solar eclipse will fall across the UK and that will only be a partial eclipse. The next full solar eclipse to cover the UK won’t happen till 2090.

So should you stock up on beers, prime the bbq and hold an eclipse watching party?

What does a discipline like Feng Shui, which has many complex calculations based on the movement of the Sun and Moon, have to say on this?

Solar eclipse
The Sun and the Moon both have enormous gravitational fields that influence life on Earth. A New Moon – one where the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and so appears like a black disc as the Sun’s light is on the side facing away from us – happens once every 28 days roughly. It’s the time when many women who have a natural menstrual cycle will have their period and it’s also been shown that it raises the rate of seizures amongst epileptics by short circuiting the electric chemistry in the brain. The New Moon is considered the feminine phase of the Moon and although it assists in detoxing, anything physical such as exercise seems harder till the Moon switches to Full Moon. In fact even sleeping is harder under the influence of the New Moon.

The contrast to this is the Sun who’s rays falling upon the Earth are part of what makes life possible here. Just a little closer or further away and the Earth wouldn’t be teeming with life. All plant life depends directly upon the Sun’s energy and all animal life depends upon indirectly, in that it either eats plants or eats other plant eating animals, as well as directly in the Circadian Rhythm which influences our eating and sleeping behaviours. Our bodies are highly evolved and adapted to the Sun’s energy and things that make us seperated from it, like working night shifts, have been shown to have damaging effects on the body and mind.

When a Solar Eclipse occurs, the New Moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun. During that time, the Moon will be reflecting the Sun’s energy back at the Sun. The shadow of the Moon will cast darkness across parts of the Earth.

In Feng Shui analysis, this is considered particularly inauspicious.

The path of the New Moon will cause a disruption of the gravitational field from the Sun as well as reflect back it’s light. In the period leading up to, during and for some time after, this unusual ripple in the unseen energies in the cosmos will present a particularly savage type of Sha Qi, or negative energy. In fact the traditional European word for an eclipse is an Occultation, which shows you how it’s long been connected with dark forces.

There’s been a large geomagnetic storm leading up to it, the temperature will drop several degrees during it and there may be an eerie wind. This particular eclipse will be particularly strong since the Moon is the closest it’s been to the Earth in 18 years, making the disruptive energies stronger than if it were far away.

Like Western traditions, Feng Shui knowledge states that being outdoors during a solar eclipse is very bad. It can cause up to seven years of extreme bad luck with much misfortune and adversity.

My advice

I advise my clients, students and friends to be indoors during the eclipse’s occultation.

Looking at the eclipse directly will vastly increase the amount of Sha Qi you intake.

Do not let the shadow fall directly on you and take care to avoid any wind the eclipse may draw up.

Let the scientists video the eclipse for you and watch it on telly if you will, but do not look at it as this is a rare event where the forces at play are far stronger than your energy field. It will imprint on your energy field in ways that your energy field isn’t designed to work. Your energy field will take a long time to restore itself. So leave the spectacle to others and have your solar eclipse party, hidden away indoors with the windows and doors shut!

CLSA use Feng Shui for Economic Forecast

CLSA Annual Feng Shui report

CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets is Asia’s leading, independent brokerage and investment group. With their headquarters in Hong Kong it’s hardly suprising that as a company they have a deep insight into Asian business practices.

It’ll therefore be of great relief to many of their clients to know that CLSA are active users of Feng Shui. Many top Asian business people and corporates and especially those with roots in Hong Kong would consider it near negligent to not of have assessed Feng Shui’s impact.

In the UK, CLSA is based in Moorgate, London. They’ve consulted Rising Dragon Feng Shui for Feng Shui advice on specific projects and places since 2002. With the Year of the Ox about to take over from the Rat, CLSA asked Angela to present Feng Shui to a number of fund managers and clients.

CLSA Feng Shui reportAngela at the CLSA Feng Shui seminar holding her Feng Shui Forecast for 2009

The Year of the Ox begins on 26th January. It’s a year belonging to the Earth element and Angela presented both the principles of Feng Shui together with key insights into the economic outlook including politics and weather as well as industrial sectors. Interestingly, the BBC covered CLSA Asia-Pacific’s use of Feng Shui and their reporting gives you a little more insight into some of the areas Angela covered.

Rising Dragon Feng Shui’s Angela Ang is a leading international Feng Shui consultant with a client list that includes corporations, celebrities and the media. She is available for hire as a keynote speaker for seminars, events and lunches. Contact us if you’d like to include a Feng Shui for Chinese New Year presentation to your festivities!

Angela’s Feng Shui seminar at the Mind Body Soul Exhibition, Brentwood, Essex

Mind Body Soul Festival

It’s been a few years since last I spoke at the annual Mind Body Soul Exhibition in Brentwood, Essex. Situated just outside London, it draws a wide variety conscious and spiritual people and is one of the biggest annual conferences of it’s kind in the UK outside of central London. With TV’s “Street Psychic” Tony Stockwell amongst the speakers, I was therefore naturally delighted and honored when the first presenter pass for the show was issued to me!

Presenter Pass number 001 - mine!

I was also very pleased to get a great slot following well known Steve Nobel and Lucinda Drayton to take stage at 4pm. Midday in Chinese metaphysics is considered most Yang. I’m also very Yang in my energies and so I prefer a slot away from midday. Judging by the way the room filled up so do you guys!

This year I gave a talk called “Improve Your Luck, Love and Health with Feng Shui“. I was overwhelmed with the number of areas people in the audience wanted me to help with! Relationships, energy levels, finances… even bad neighbours! I hope to get time out to run this seminar again in the future and for those of you didn’t have the chance to catch it live this time, I hope to be getting some video footage of it soon. Till then, please do contact me if your situation is serious and requires professional attention.

Nam Yang Lions & Dragons Dance at Buckingham Palace

Traditional Welcome for President Hu Jintao of China

Celebrity performances are always a great way of raising the profile of martial arts in the UK and celebrity parties don’t get much bigger than a state banquet for the president of China, hosted by Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace! It was therefore a great honour that my ancestor Master Ang Lian Huat’s association, Nam Yang Pugilistic Association, was asked to be the ones representing Her Majesty’s hospitality toward President Hu.

Clearly events like this constitute a coming together of East and West. Martial arts, like Feng Shui, Accupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, are great examples of Eastern culture being adopted and valued in the West and it is great to see martial arts groups being invited to demonstrate their skills to celebrate such occasions.

Lion and Dragon Dances are traditionally performed only by Kung Fu troupes and bring luck and prosperity. They are a must to welcome celebrities and V.I.P.s.

Nam Yang Pugilistic Association flag
Although “Nam Yang” in the name of my ancestor’s association refers to the South Seas where it was born, it is today one of the most respected Kung Fu Associations in Europe having been one of the few to begin teaching the inner secrets to non-Chinese students. That trust is clearly shown in Her Majesty The Queen’s choice of them to symbolically show the current increasing understanding between East and West in representing Britain’s welcome to China

My ancestor’s Kung Fu club is one of the oldest in the world. Nam Yang Pugilistic Association is well recognised as one of Britain’s foremost Kung Fu groups with a continually expanding portfolio of celebrity performances including Prince Edward, Ken Hom, Fern Britain/Philip Shoefield, Ken Livingstone and Gloria Huniford to name but a few. Nam Yang always perform at the big Chinese New Year celebrations in Trafalgar Square, displaying Chinese martial arts and Qi Gong as well as Lion and Dragon dance. They regularly represent Britain in international competition.

The events outside the palace kicked off with a parade down the Mall by two dragons – one on either side – supported by the association’s lions and banners. This was actually featured on BBC2’s ‘Have I Got News For You’ although the presenter had problems reading the word ‘Pugilistic’. And we thought that they were all supposed to be clever on that programme!

The main performance took place on a rather posh looking grassy area just in front of the palace. It lasted a full hour with lions and dragons alternating over that time. Five lions or two dragons performed at any one time to traditional music played on drum, cymbals and gong. During this time President Hu arrived with the Royals, as did the numerous guests for the state banquet – mostly politicians and ambassadors, although it was impossible to get close to them because of extremely tight police security measures.

Imaging a 20 foot dragon writhing around as it rears up before you? Yeah, these guys look scary!

The performance was originally scheduled for late morning as President Hu and the Queen travelled from Houseguards Parade, down the Mall to the palace in the Royal Coach. Fortunately someone had the sense to realise that if dragons panicked the horses drawing the Royal Coach, a major diplomatic incident might ensue!

The event was sponsored by the London Chinatown Association who work closely with the Chinese Embassy to promote Chinese culture and interests in the UK. They generously laid on a Chinese banquet for the performers after the event, many of whom had travelled in from Nam Yang martial arts groups as far a field as Marlborough, Portsmouth and Brighton.

Master Iain Armstrong, two times world Kung Fu champion and head of Nam Yang’s UK branch explained the significance of activities such as this:

“Lion and Dragon dances are taken extremely seriously in the traditional Chinese martial arts community. To be the group chosen to perform for the President of China is a huge honour. Absolutely massive! We take our lions and dragons extremely seriously. Each is inbued with it’s own spirit in an eye dotting ceremony – some details of which we do not reveal. They bring great luck and energy , you might call it ‘lucky chi’. Performances like this stir up great energy and some of this energy sticks with the lions and dragons – making them extra lucky – and with our club. So we should do really well in the near future!”

Two of the Nam Yang Lion Dancers take a moment at ease after a gruelling hour long performance – make sure you get to see the next public spectacle when they perform for Chinese New Year in Trafalgar Square!

To see Nam Yang perform live, why not attend the Chinese New Year celebrations in Trafalgar Square on January 29th 2006? The action will start late morning with a parade down Charing Cross Road. The big dragon dance usually takes place shortly after midday. The whole event is free, so you can’t loose!
